  • Health Test Card (description from the ADA): The American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, and American Heart Association have created a "health test card” and other supporting materials designed for use in a clinical setting to facilitate communication between a patient and a provider about recommended health tests and to increase the number of people being screened for chronic diseases. The products are free to clinician offices, although shipping and handling fees do apply.

Understanding Diabetes is a new seven-part animated video series that educates children and their parents about diabetes and its management. The short videos cover the basics of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, blood glucose monitoring, eating and exercise, diabetes control and living with diabetes. National Diabetes Education Program

NDEP is a partnership of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more than 200 public and private organizations. NDEP resources help educate people about how to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and, for those with diabetes, manage their diabetes and prevent complications. The resources are also based on science, tailored to a wide range of groups, culturally and linguistically appropriate and copyright-free. Just a couple of the resources include:

National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse

The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) is a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The NIDDK is part of the National Institutes of Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

University of Illinois Extension has many resources geared towards consumers with diabetes, ranging from the informational to the interactive. Karen Chapman-Novakofski, PhD, RD, LDN (NEP member and chair-elect) is the primary author of each website. Leia Kedem, MS, RD, LDN (NEP member and website content coordinator) also made significant contributions to several of these resources.

This newsletter, published 6 times annually, covers emerging topics in diabetes management such as new medication options, complications, and more. Recipes and a sample menu plan are included in each issue.

This website is targeted to caregivers, parents, teachers, and other individuals working with youth with diabetes (both type 1 and type 2), but can also be explored with the child or teen to help them learn more about their condition. Try out the games where you can practice building appropriate snacks, planning meals, or learning carbohydrate counting. Importantly, this resource covers common difficulties that can arise with youth, including behavioral problems related to the diabetes, dealing with sick days and special occasions, and managing diabetes at school.

HOT (Healthy Outcomes for Teens) Project is geared towards youth and teens and teaches about food, fitness, and preventing diabetes in an interactive format. Information is presented through pictures, videos, animations, games, and quizzes. The website can be used as part of a school curriculum and includes a teacher's guide. Topics covered include food groups, portion sizes, calorie balance, incorporating physical activity, food labels, managing stress, and more.

Recipes for Diabetes is a collection of diabetes-friendly healthy recipes. A wide variety of dishes can be found on the site, including entrees, sides, desserts, and more. A nutritional analysis accompanies each recipe, including calories, fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrate, sodium, cholesterol, and fiber. Exchanges and carb units based on the American Diabetes Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics guidelines are also included. Pictures accompany many of the recipes.

Fiesta of Flavors is an expansion of University of Illinois Extension's diabetes-friendly recipe collection, with a Hispanic/Latin flair. Lighter versions of traditional dishes from Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain, and Central- and South America can be found on this website. Pictures accompany most recipes and a nutritional analysis is available for each.
