Leia (Kedem) Flure is a registered dietitian with a B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Nutritional Sciences, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her dietetic internship through the University of Houston in Texas. Leia currently coordinates marketing and communications for the ABCs of School Nutrition program with University of Illinois Extension, and volunteers her time as website coordinator for Nutrition Education for the Public DPG and as an assistant administrator for the Build Up Dietitians Facebook page.
Leia has a varied work history, having previously counseled head and neck cancer patients in an outpatient setting. She has also been an instructor in the Agricultural Communications program at the University of Illinois, helping undergraduates develop their writing skills specific to food and agricultural issues.
Prior to this, she worked for University of Illinois Extension as a Nutrition and Wellness Educator, facilitating programs in 4 counties with a focus on weight management, healthy cooking, and increasing consumer literacy on controversial food issues like GMOs and artificial sweeteners. In this position, Leia became well-known in the community as "Moderation Maven," a media personality she developed by writing a biweekly column for the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette, appearing weekly on Champaign's CBS station, and maintaining an active social media presence.
For these efforts, Leia was recognized as the 2015 recipient of the Anita Owen Award for Innovative Nutrition Education from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. She also received Central Illinois Business Magazine's Top 40 Under 40 Award in 2014.
Leia continues to advocate for science and shares practical nutrition advice as @ModerationMaven on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
